Ms Pemo Theodore – The Cycles of Love…. and how they move us!


Let’s have a look at how Wallace Simpson and Edward, the Duke of Windsor’s relationship was experienced in its own right, by viewing their composite chart. What are the themes it reflects and how is it fulfilled or triggered by transits and progressions.

Composite chart: derived ascendant method for the place of meeting Melton Mowbray, England.

Progressed composite charts: individual’s day for a year progressed charts, for their place of birth for the same date and time each year & then calculate the composite chart for the 2 progressed charts.

In the composite chart of their relationship you will notice that the most important composite planets, the C Sun and Moon, are involved in an out of sign Cardinal Tsquare, the C Sun conjunct C Ceres in the 5th opposing the C Moon in the 11th squared by C Chiron in the 8th. This is obviously a strong relationship, as these significant planets are activating strong relating houses. At the focus of this Tsquare, C Chiron speaks about vulnerability that brings conflict both through sexuality and shared resources. The C Sun (5th) often reflects the more active partner and certainly it appeared that Edward was overtly more besotted with Wallis, whilst she appeared to be more detached (11th). ‘What had started as a “flirt” by Wallis flowered into a full-blown affair. Lord Castlerosse, who knew the prince well, insisted the attraction between them was not sex. A closer friend disagreed: “She must have given him something in bed that no other woman ever did. She must have made him feel more vital, more masculine, more satisfied.” ’ (6) Again notice the strong mercurial influence with C Venus and 4 other bodies in Gemini in the 4th house and Mercury the ruler in Cancer, therefore ruling the C Moon, which together with the C Sun, the most important planets in the composite chart. Of course the C Sun too is in Cancer, so ruled by the C Moon and conjunct C Mercury, and here again we meet Hermaphroditus through this relationship.

Both brought vulnerabilities to the relationship, sexually and through their common property, which paradoxically also helped to cement their union. Their vulnerabilities were apparent to the end, having been exiled from England, losing the throne and not empowered to live their lives in the manner that they would have chosen. There were also rumored manipulative attempts to regain the throne through ‘deals’ with the Nazis during the Second World War. The British Government shipped the couple off to the Bahamas where it was more difficult for them to keep up their contacts within Germany. A proliferation of books, (Edward’s autobiography A King’s Story appeared in 1951), media reports, and TV dramatizations about their relationship indicated by C Sappho conjunct C Pluto close to C Venus and C Amor all in Gemini.

C Venus is involved in a Mutable Cross closely conjunct C Amor and C Pluto which is closely conjunct C Sappho in the 4th house opposing the C Midheaven whilst the C true South Node in the 8th is opposing C true Black Moon Lilith in the 2nd. This is a dramatic love that is created by their ideals and brings intense change to the very foundations of their life together. Their love won out but at the cost of the loss of Edward’s position in life and his home and family. The ideal of love and the boundaries between them were challenged and summed up by the now famous quote by Edward when abdicating: “I have found it impossible to carry the heavy burden of responsibility and to discharge my duties as king as I would wish to do without the help and support of the woman I love.”

C Venus is also part of a Grand Trine in Air including C Chiron in the 8th house and the C Ascendant and asteroid Hygiea in the 1st house. Obviously there was a flow of connection between them both through their vulnerabilities sexually and the healing effect they experienced in this relationship. However the C Ascendant/Descendant axes is also part of a Fixed Cross, with C Aphrodite and C Juno in the 7th and C Vesta in the 6th, and all these very close to the Descendant. They are challenged to bring the fated quality of their love into partnership roles whilst raising it to a higher level through the service they show each other. C Saturn in the 9th opposing C Cupido in the 3rd forms the other half of the Cross. The commitment they share is communicated in beautiful versions of the truth and endearments for each other.

We can now summarize in simple terms the composite chart. The C Amor, C Pluto, C Sappho and C Neptune (by implication) conjunction infer an idealistic, intensity, powerful communication and romance that seems bigger than the individuals personal lives. C Mercury brings movement and stimulus and C Jupiter (by implication) brings that movement to a larger & more social stage of the world. C Aphrodite and C Juno conjunction implies that the dynamic and fated quality of their love needs to be channeled into formal roles together, such as marriage. C Chiron infers that instinctively they are together due to their individual vulnerabilities. C true BML makes this relationship one that satisfies darker and sexual soul needs may not be socially acceptable. C Cupido asks that beauty and aesthetics alway be considered when they are together. You can see now how the flavors in their individual signatures become focused in the composite chart as part of the dynamics of the relationship.

They met for the first time in 1930 as guests of Lady Furness in Melton Mowbray, England and we find that the Progressed Composite Midheaven was opposite C Jupiter and inconjunct the C asteroid Juno implying a creative challenge to find their roles in partnership together. Usually the initial meet or start of a relationship is heralded by a transit or progression to the Composite Midheaven. Progressed C Aphrodite was sextile the C Pluto Sappho conjunction and trine C Mars softening the shock of the fated quality of their connection and triggering a strong sexual charge and the relationship’s beginnings. Transiting Sappho conjuncts C Uranus which implies they felt free to experience the relationship in all its individuality and that they had the boldness to carve it in its own right. In fact they carried on their relationship quite openly whilst the English media kept the news from the public, however the international press reported widely on the relationship. Transiting Ceres conjunct the C Venus Amor conjunction then the Pluto Sappho conjunction then Neptune, then C Sun, then C Mercury and finally C Jupiter during the year activates the ‘until death do we part’ nurturing love of these major planets and love asteroids within the first year of their relationship. As well Ceres opposed the C Moon mid 1930. Transiting Saturn also opposed C Sun, Mercury then Jupiter while squaring Mars whilst inconjunct the C Venus Amor conjunction. This was enough to cement a long term relationship and also possibly heightened the sexual attraction initially and impressed on them both the limits the relationship was under at that time. Transiting Uranus was also conjunct C Mars and sextile C Venus Amor then Pluto Sappho square Mercury then Jupiter adding excitement, interest and movement to the mix and of course Mercury activated movement in the relationship, the beginning. As I mentioned earlier, most relationships commence when there is a contact to the Composite Midheaven and transiting Neptune squared the C Midheaven and was also inconjunct the Ascendant.

The death of King George V on 20 Jan1936 ushered in the next major cycle and movement in the relationship, when Edward ascended to the throne. At this time progressed C Cupido was sextile C Jupiter and progressed C Ceres was conjunct C Mercury indicating some heightened movement and a forcing of decision as regards the relationship. Also progressed C BML was trine C Mercury anticipating an outcome in favor of the soulful and sexual union of this unlikely pair. To see the trigger of this event in the Composite chart, we notice the progressed C Moon opposing the C Moon in January 1936 whilst the longer term progressed C Mercury conjuncts the C Descendant (his brother George VI ascended the throne after Edward’s abdication) and the progressed C Ascendant square Aphrodite (here come those ice weasels again)! Fate certainly was against Edward staying on the throne and also marrying Wallis Simpson, forced into a decision about having his cake and not eating it too? Transiting Cupido had just opposed their C Venus and transiting Ceres was conjunct Uranus indicating that the next step for the relationship was the radical step of abdication, things weren’t looking good and the time demanded a shocking change. Transiting Juno also squared C Aphrodite implying that their roles together were fated and that this brought inherent conflict. As well transiting Saturn squared Venus testing the relationship for the long term haul and in fact ‘Although Wallis and Edward were in love before his ascension to the throne, he had made no formal proposal of marriage. It was only after scheduling his first formal dinner at York House that he asked Wallis to be there, because, as he said, “Sooner or later, my prime minister must meet my future wife.” (1) Transiting Uranus also squared C Aphrodite and transiting Neptune conjunct the true C South Node drawing the fate of the relationship down, to be lived out in the world.

After the abdication and Wallis’s second divorce, the couple were married on June 3, 1937 at Chateau de Candé, Monts, France. At that time progressed C Amor was applying inconjunct to the C Ascendant whilst progressed C Aphrodite was inconjunct C true BML and progressed C Cupido was sextile to C true BML. Their ideals around love were being challenged through others and their environment, but their soul and sexual union was being given an opportunity for fulfillment. Progressed C Ceres was applying to conjunct C Mercury and progressed C Sun was applying sextile to C Pluto and Sappho.

Movement was necessary for them to be together ‘till death do us part’ and in fact it was their desire to be together that prompted their movement and displacement. This was also the beginning of a number of movements for the next few years as the German occupation progressed across Europe. Also progressed C Mercury conjunct the C Descendant and C Aphrodite, whilst progressed C Mars squared C Juno and the progressed C Asc conjuncts C Cupido. This was a truly fated union where their marriage roles challenged everything they had formerly held dear. They did have a fairytale wedding and honeymoon in Austria. The wedding being a significant committed start to the relationship was represented by the progressed C Midheaven sextile the C true BML and the event was triggered by progressed C Moon triggering the Grand Trine in Water as it was semisextile C Neptune, trine C Uranus and C true North Node in June 1937.

Transiting Ceres was also semisextile the C Ascendant (1deg) at this time, whilst true BML squared the C true North Node opposed C Neptune and semisextile Uranus. They were celebrating the fruition of their love whilst the shadow of their soul yearnings had conspired their fate of exile. Transiting Jupiter was also inconjunct C Ceres and transiting Saturn opposition C Chiron indicating that there was a creative challenge in the growth of their relationship and that the establishment was in conflict with their vulnerabilities and instinctual need to relate. We see by transit Uranus semisextile C Pluto/Sappho and semisextile C Mars, transiting Neptune square C Neptune opposing the C true North Node and sextile C Uranus giving them the necessary impetus to move forward into uncharted territory through their marriage.

In 1965 when the Duke and Duchess returned to London for the first time. They were visited by the Queen, Princess Marina and also the Princess Mary. At this time progressed C Cupido was trine C Uranus and the C true North Node and inconjunct C Neptune. Superficially at least, there appeared to be some harmony and acceptance of the individual nature of their relationship by the monarchy. Also progressed C Ceres squared C Mars in the 2nd whilst being inconjunct C Pluto, implying that this action challenged the status quo at the time, whilst being necessary to their fulfillment as a couple. The progressed C Sun squared the C Venus Amor conjunction and the progressed C Midheaven was trine C Pluto, heralding a renewal or rebirth within the relationship. By transit Amor was semisextile C Mars and squared C Ceres, again implying an opportunity to assert their ideals in love and the conflict about how they cared for each other. Also transiting Aphrodite was sextile the C Ascendant and semisextile C Saturn, the fated quality of their love was now more in harmony with their environment and the establishment. Transiting Cupido was sextile C Pluto and Sappho and transiting Ceres inconjunct C Aphrodite and transiting Juno con C Mercury. This change was an opportunity for them again to look good together and redefine their partnership and the roles they played in it. Transiting Saturn was applying to a square of C Pluto and Sappho whilst Uranus applied to oppose C true BML. Things had come full cycle and the loss of Edward’s roots, family and home was being replaced by a detached more forgiving attitude by the Royal Family.

The Duke died of throat cancer on 28 May 1972 in Paris, and his body was returned to Britain for burial at Frogmore, near Windsor Castle. The increasingly senile and frail Duchess traveled to England to attend his funeral, staying at Buckingham Palace during her visit. As the curtain fell on the Duke’s life, it was heralded by the progression of C Ceres opposing C Jupiter and progressed C Venus close (1deg) to opposing C true BML; square C Pluto Sappho and inconjunct C Mars. The end of this cycle was implied by the progressed C Midheaven square C Uranus (9th) just past and now trine C Neptune and inconjunct C true North Node. The Midheaven/IC axis of the composite chart indicates the beginnings and endings in a relationship through transits and progressions. Transiting Aphrodite also applied to a square of the C Ascendant and Cupido opposed the C true North Node and squared C Neptune. The time had come for a fateful ending in the relationship and dissolution of the partnership. Transiting Vesta sextile C Mercury also represented the sacrifice to the relationship through Edward’s death. Transiting Jupiter opposed C Mercury and Saturn separated from a conjunction with C Venus and Amor evoking a larger movement now and a testing of the ideal love they shared. Edward was finally able to return to his home in England, as his final resting place. Pluto by transit applied to a trine with the C Ascendant and his death brought a truce with the Royal family as much as was possible.

The final cycle and chapter in this relationship was the death of the Duchess of Windsor on 24 April 1986 in Paris, a decade and a half after her husband. She was buried alongside him in Frogmore simply as “Wallis, Duchess of Windsor”. At this time progressed C Amor was inconjunct C Moon and the progressed C Sappho conjunct C Jupiter. Progressed C Ceres, the Goddess of the harvest, opposite C Jupiter and sextile C true

BML gave opportunity to let go now. Progressed C Juno was trine C Cupido and sextile C Mercury and progressed C BML trine C Uranus conjunct C true North Node and square C Neptune indicating that they were now free to explore further adventures? Also progressed Mars was semisextile C Ceres inconjunct C Moon whilst the progressed C Ascendant was conjunct Mercury and the progressed C MC trine C Saturn and this of course was the last significant movement in the relationship. By transit Cupido was forming a finger of fate being inconjunct C Ceres and Psyche, bringing this fated relationship to view again. Transiting Saturn opposed C Venus Amor representing the end (note that it was conjunct these when the Duke had died) and Pluto trine C Mercury.

The cycles of love or a relationship follow the cycles of life; the transitions guided by Mercury (Hermes) the messenger of the Greek gods, connecting everything through movement and cycles. However we all leave our own individual footprints in the passage and relationships add their own brand of individual and fated flavors to these cycles. These love signatures can be identified from the individual’s natal charts and Venus Personare charts. When we come together with a partner, these signatures blend to become a relationship signature which can be observed in the composite chart. Most of us will not have such dramatic cycles in love as the Duke and Duchess of Windsor. Still generally the conflicts and challenges of loving each other when in relationship are experienced by those of us courageous enough to walk where the ice weasels may come!
